On top of some of the plateau's within the Grand Staircase-Escalante NM you can find some amazing patterns that continue around entire formations.
Hiking around the top of this formation we came across a fairly large almost hidden water hole.
The wonderful thing about hiking with geologists is that you find out some very interesting items about how these amazing formations came about.
After hiking around the top of the ridge I dropped down into this wonderful smooth sandstone drainage. It was amazing how over the years the water had almost polished the sandstone rocks.
It is amazing to see these thin sandstone fins still standing and many years did it take to get to this point.
As I was climbing to the top of this plateau I came across these very thin fin like layers.
In case you have ever wondered why this place is called the 'Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument'.
I found this interesting eroded sandstone formation that reminded me of an ancient volcano plug.
At times hiking along the side of this amazing sandstone plateau felt like you were in another world.
This was the first formation I found when hiking this large canyon and the top portion looked like Star Wars Yoda to me.
It is interesting to see how erosion and rain can create some amazing sand formations.
